Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Fancy Feast and Royal Canin both sit inside multinational consumer goods groups, but the two brands draw on very different corporate heritages. Fancy Feast wins shoppers on variety and palatability rather than nutritional reinvention, using meat by-products and thickeners common to mainstream wet food. Royal Canin runs roughly 260 formulas worldwide organised by breed, life stage and condition, with a substantial veterinary prescription range. The two brands differ in several ways beyond the one point highlighted here.
Fancy Feast is made in Pluakdaeng, Rayong, Thailand. It was created by Carnation in 1982 as the first 'gourmet' cat food, predating Nestlé's acquisition by three years.
Royal Canin is largely supplied to Australia from Mars' Gimje plant in South Korea, opened in 2018 and undergoing a KRW 210 billion expansion through 2025.
