Hill's Science Diet and Open Farm sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Hill's Science Diet faced a 2019 vitamin D over-supplementation recall on canned dog food that led to a US$12.5 million class-action settlement; cat food was not affected. Open Farm is a Certified B Corporation built around ethically sourced ingredients and per-batch traceability, founded in Toronto in 2014 by Jacqueline Prehogan and Isaac Langleben. Shared USA provenance does not mean shared approach; each brand has carved out a distinct position in the market.
Hill's Science Diet is made in the United States. It employs more than 150 in-house veterinarians and PhD nutritionists, and runs a veterinary-only clinical portal at myhillsvet.com.au.
Open Farm formulates and distributes from Canada while manufacturing the food sold in Australia at a United States facility. It publishes a traceability system that lets owners look up the farms and fisheries behind a given bag or carton.
