Hill's Science Diet and Wellness CORE sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Hill's Science Diet faced a 2019 vitamin D over-supplementation recall on canned dog food that led to a US$12.5 million class-action settlement; cat food was not affected. Wellness CORE is owned by the private equity firm Clearlake Capital, which acquired it from Berwind Corporation in 2020, and markets itself as the largest independent North American pet food maker. Shared USA provenance does not mean shared approach; each brand has carved out a distinct position in the market.
Hill's Science Diet is made in the United States. It employs more than 150 in-house veterinarians and PhD nutritionists, and runs a veterinary-only clinical portal at myhillsvet.com.au.
Wellness CORE makes its dry kibble in the United States while the wet cans and pouches are made in Thailand.
