Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Open Farm and Tiki Cat sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Open Farm has taken growth equity from the United States firm General Atlantic but remains founder-led rather than under corporate majority ownership. Tiki Cat was acquired by General Mills in December 2024 for US$1.45 billion, bringing it into the same portfolio as Blue Buffalo. The ownership transitions at both brands reflect a broader pattern of pet food consolidation in the 2020s.
Open Farm formulates and distributes from Canada while manufacturing the food sold in Australia at a United States facility. It publishes a traceability system that lets owners look up the farms and fisheries behind a given bag or carton.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
