Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning

Orijen and Royal Canin both sit inside multinational consumer goods groups, but the two brands draw on very different corporate heritages. Orijen is built around 'WholePrey' ratios with 85 to 90 percent animal inclusions including fresh and raw meat, organs and bone. Royal Canin runs roughly 260 formulas worldwide organised by breed, life stage and condition, with a substantial veterinary prescription range. The two brands differ in several ways beyond the one point highlighted here.

Orijen runs production exclusively at two company-owned kitchens in Alberta and Kentucky with no private-label work.

Royal Canin is largely supplied to Australia from Mars' Gimje plant in South Korea, opened in 2018 and undergoing a KRW 210 billion expansion through 2025.
