Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Pikko and Tiki Cat sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Pikko is an independent Perth brand making small-batch gently cooked meals delivered frozen by subscription within Western Australia. Tiki Cat was founded in 2005 in California by Christine and Robert Hackett through their company Petropics; Christine drew on her PetCo research and development background to design an ultra-low-carbohydrate wet food. The founder stories remain central to how each brand still talks about itself today.
Pikko uses 100 percent meat recipes with named cuts and organs and a premix built on vitamin K2 rather than menadione.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
