Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Royal Canin and Ziwi Peak sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Royal Canin runs roughly 260 formulas worldwide organised by breed, life stage and condition, with a substantial veterinary prescription range. Ziwi Peak uses recipes that routinely carry 96 percent meat, organs, bone and green-lipped mussel with zero grain, legume or potato content. The two brands differ in several ways beyond the one point highlighted here.
Royal Canin is largely supplied to Australia from Mars' Gimje plant in South Korea, opened in 2018 and undergoing a KRW 210 billion expansion through 2025.
Ziwi Peak is made at a purpose-built kitchen in Napier, New Zealand, which replaced its original Mount Maunganui operations in 2022, with all meat and seafood sourced within New Zealand.
