Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Tiki Cat and Trilogy offer two different approaches to the Australian cat food market. Tiki Cat was acquired by General Mills in December 2024 for US$1.45 billion, bringing it into the same portfolio as Blue Buffalo. Trilogy sits under Real Pet Food Company alongside Ivory Coat; the group is majority-owned by a Chinese-Singaporean consortium including Hosen Capital, Temasek and New Hope Group. The ownership transitions at both brands reflect a broader pattern of pet food consolidation in the 2020s.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
Trilogy uses deliberately regional proteins including Northern Territory barramundi, outback kangaroo and Australian salmon alongside New Zealand lamb. It is built on a three-pillar philosophy of protein, grasses and water, translated into grain-free kibble with freeze-dried meat inclusions and wet food in bone broth.
