Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Tiki Cat and Wellness CORE sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Tiki Cat was acquired by General Mills in December 2024 for US$1.45 billion, bringing it into the same portfolio as Blue Buffalo. Wellness CORE is owned by the private equity firm Clearlake Capital, which acquired it from Berwind Corporation in 2020, and markets itself as the largest independent North American pet food maker. The ownership transitions at both brands reflect a broader pattern of pet food consolidation in the 2020s.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
Wellness CORE makes its dry kibble in the United States while the wet cans and pouches are made in Thailand.
