Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Tiki Cat and Ziwi Peak sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Tiki Cat was acquired by General Mills in December 2024 for US$1.45 billion, bringing it into the same portfolio as Blue Buffalo. Ziwi Peak was acquired by Hong Kong-based FountainVest Partners in September 2021 at a valuation of around NZ$1.5 billion, after a bidding war against Boyu Capital and reportedly Nestlé. The ownership transitions at both brands reflect a broader pattern of pet food consolidation in the 2020s.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
Ziwi Peak is made at a purpose-built kitchen in Napier, New Zealand, which replaced its original Mount Maunganui operations in 2022, with all meat and seafood sourced within New Zealand. It uses recipes that routinely carry 96 percent meat, organs, bone and green-lipped mussel with zero grain, legume or potato content.
