Ask whether wet or dry is better and you will get a confident answer either way. The honest version is less tidy. Both can be complete and balanced, both feed millions of healthy cats, and the choice that matters most is usually not the one the question implies. The real differences sit in moisture, energy density, and whether you are comparing the two fairly in the first place.
Here is what actually separates them, and what to weigh for your own cat.
A food being wet or dry tells you almost nothing about its quality on its own. A dry food can be built around named meat with a sound nutrient profile. A wet food can be padded with gelling agents and little else. Format is a starting point, not a verdict. The useful questions are what is in the food, whether it meets a recognised nutrient profile, and how it fits your cat and your routine.
So the useful comparison is what each format actually changes.
This is the one genuine, built-in difference between the two, and almost everything else follows from it.
Wet food is mostly water. Canned and pouch products typically run around 75 to 82% moisture. Dry food sits at the other end, usually around 6 to 10%. That is not a minor gap. A mouthful of wet food is roughly three-quarters water before your cat has touched the bowl. A mouthful of kibble is almost none.
Why this matters more for cats than for dogs or people comes down to where cats came from. The domestic cat descends from a desert-dwelling ancestor and is built to take most of its water from prey, which is itself about 70% water. Cats also have a famously blunted thirst response. The practical result shows up in controlled feeding studies: a 2017 study at Massey University's Centre of Feline Nutrition[1] found that cats took in significantly more total water, and produced more urine, on a canned diet than on a dry one. A larger study run by Nestle Purina and presented at the 2014 WSAVA congress[2] put rough numbers on it, with cats on an all-wet diet drinking around twice as much in total and producing about a third more urine than cats on all-dry. That study was funded by the manufacturer and shown under industry sponsorship, which is worth keeping in mind, but the direction of the finding is not in dispute and the independent work agrees: cats fed dry food tend not to fully make up the difference at the water bowl.
This is where most wet-versus-dry comparisons quietly go wrong, and it is the reason this site leans so hard on dry matter basis.
Take a wet food listing 10% crude protein and a dry food listing 35%. It looks obvious: the dry food has far more protein. Except the wet food is around 78% water and the dry food is around 10%, so you are not comparing like with like. Strip the water out of both and the picture flips.
The wet food is the higher-protein food once you remove the water, despite the smaller number on the tin. This is standard veterinary teaching, and the worked example above is the textbook one.[8] Until you convert both to the same basis, the as-fed percentages on the label are not telling you what they appear to. Because wet food carries so much more water, cats eating it take in more total water and tend to produce more dilute urine. That part is well established. Where it matters clinically is the urinary tract. Increasing water intake to keep the urine dilute is a standard part of how vets manage cats with feline idiopathic cystitis and some types of bladder stone,[3] and feeding wet food is one of the usual ways to get there.
The picture is easy to oversell. Dilute urine is a management tool, not a cure, and whether it matters for your cat is a question for your vet rather than a reason every cat needs wet food. The evidence that wet food specifically beats dry for cystitis is genuinely mixed: some trials show a benefit, others show none,[4] and part of the benefit seen in therapeutic urinary diets comes from added omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants rather than water alone. For a healthy cat that drinks well, a good dry diet can be perfectly fine. But if your cat has a history of urinary trouble, moisture is one of the levers a vet will often reach for, and that is a fair point in the wet column.
The most common argument for dry food is that it cleans teeth. It is mostly a myth, with a smaller true version hiding inside it.
Standard kibble does little for dental health. Most pieces shatter on first contact and never reach the gum line, and many cats swallow kibble with barely a chew, so the scrubbing effect people picture largely does not happen.[9] The World Small Animal Veterinary Association's dental guidelines say as much directly,[5] and veterinary dental specialists such as Dr Fraser Hale make the same point.[6] The true version is that some dental diets are specifically engineered for it, with larger, more fibrous pieces built to resist crumbling and wipe the tooth, or with additives that slow plaque and tartar. That is a deliberate design, not a property of dry food in general. If dental benefit is the goal, the marker to look for is a product accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council,[7] which keeps a list of foods and treats with verified plaque or tartar claims, not simply the fact that a food is dry.
In other words, cleaning teeth is not a reason to choose ordinary kibble.
Because dry food has had the water removed, it is far more calorie-dense by weight. As a rough guide, a gram of kibble carries something like three to five times the calories of a gram of wet food, most of which is water. A common veterinary teaching figure puts dry food near 350 calories per 100 grams and wet food near 100.[8] Two things follow from that.
First, portions look very different. You feed a small measured amount of dry and a much larger amount of wet for the same energy, which is worth knowing before a serve of wet food looks alarmingly large. Our feeding calculator works in calories, so the format does not throw the numbers off.
Second, cost. Wet food almost always costs more per usable calorie, sometimes several times more, precisely because you are paying to ship and store water. If you compare prices, compare per calorie or per dry gram rather than per gram as fed, for the same reason you compare protein on a dry matter basis. A cheap-looking tin and an expensive-looking bag can swap places once you account for the water.
There is no universal answer, and anyone who gives you one is skipping the part that matters. Both formats can be complete and balanced. What actually decides it for your cat is a short list.
Plenty of owners land on a mix, wet for the moisture and dry for the convenience and cost, and that is a reasonable place to be. Whatever you choose, compare the foods on the same basis first. You can put any two side by side on our compare pages, with their dry matter figures already worked out.
