Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Applaws and Hill's Science Diet sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Applaws is a British brand founded in 2006 around a high-meat-content, natural positioning with named ingredients and no synthetic additives. Hill's Science Diet traces back to Hill Rendering Works in Topeka Kansas in 1907, with the Prescription Diet line launching in 1948 and the Science Diet consumer line in 1968. Both brands lean on their heritage as a marker of trust with owners.
Applaws cans most of its Australian wet range in Thailand while making its Vitality dry food in Australia, and is sold through Pet Circle, Petbarn, Petstock and pet specialty retailers.
Hill's Science Diet is made in the United States. It employs more than 150 in-house veterinarians and PhD nutritionists, and runs a veterinary-only clinical portal at myhillsvet.com.au.
