Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
CatChi and Tiki Cat sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. CatChi is an independent Sydney brand founded in 2023, built around single-protein fresh meals delivered frozen by subscription. Tiki Cat was founded in 2005 in California by Christine and Robert Hackett through their company Petropics; Christine drew on her PetCo research and development background to design an ultra-low-carbohydrate wet food. The founder stories remain central to how each brand still talks about itself today.
CatChi uses 95 percent or more named meat and organs in every recipe, gently cooked at low temperature and snap frozen rather than extruded or canned.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
