Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Fancy Feast and NZ Natural Meow sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. Fancy Feast runs more than 100 SKUs globally across pate, gravy, broth, shredded and classic textures. NZ Natural Meow makes the range in small batches at its own New Zealand facility and is FernMark licensed as a genuine New Zealand-made producer. The two brands differ in several ways beyond the one point highlighted here.
Fancy Feast is made in Pluakdaeng, Rayong, Thailand. It was created by Carnation in 1982 as the first 'gourmet' cat food, predating Nestlé's acquisition by three years.
NZ Natural Meow makes its freeze-dried and air-dried recipes in small batches in New Zealand. It sells gently freeze-dried and air-dried raw recipes fed as-is or rehydrated rather than cooked kibble.
