Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
Feline Natural and Ziwi Peak are both owned by private equity firms, each brand having been acquired after proving its niche in the natural-food end of the market. Feline Natural kibble is made by vacuum-infusing freeze-dried liver and oils into baked pieces rather than through conventional extrusion. Ziwi Peak is made using Z-TWINTECH, the proprietary two-stage low-temperature air-drying process developed by founder Peter Mitchell to shelf-stabilise raw diets without heat extrusion. Each brand's manufacturing method is the single clearest distinction between their product ranges.
Feline Natural is made in New Zealand from 100 percent New Zealand-sourced ingredients, through manufacturing partners in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne. It was founded by Geoff Bowers, a former Royal Marine and UK police dog handler who built the concept after a sabbatical studying grey wolves in Alaska with biologist Gordon Haber.
Ziwi Peak is made at a purpose-built kitchen in Napier, New Zealand, which replaced its original Mount Maunganui operations in 2022, with all meat and seafood sourced within New Zealand. It uses recipes that routinely carry 96 percent meat, organs, bone and green-lipped mussel with zero grain, legume or potato content.
