Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
NZ Natural Meow and Orijen sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. NZ Natural Meow makes the range in small batches at its own New Zealand facility and is FernMark licensed as a genuine New Zealand-made producer. Orijen runs production exclusively at two company-owned kitchens in Alberta and Kentucky with no private-label work. The two brands differ in several ways beyond the one point highlighted here.
NZ Natural Meow makes its freeze-dried and air-dried recipes in small batches in New Zealand. It sells gently freeze-dried and air-dried raw recipes fed as-is or rehydrated rather than cooked kibble.
Orijen is built around 'WholePrey' ratios with 85 to 90 percent animal inclusions including fresh and raw meat, organs and bone.
