Background: ownership, sourcing and positioning
NZ Natural Meow and Tiki Cat sit at opposite ends of the ownership spectrum in the Australian cat food market. NZ Natural Meow is made by an independent, founder-operated New Zealand company started in 2016 by Jacqueline Taylor and Amber Cordero, separate from the KKR-owned maker of Feline Natural despite the similar name. Tiki Cat was founded in 2005 in California by Christine and Robert Hackett through their company Petropics; Christine drew on her PetCo research and development background to design an ultra-low-carbohydrate wet food. The founder stories remain central to how each brand still talks about itself today.
NZ Natural Meow makes the range in small batches at its own New Zealand facility and is FernMark licensed as a genuine New Zealand-made producer. It sells gently freeze-dried and air-dried raw recipes fed as-is or rehydrated rather than cooked kibble.
Tiki Cat has most of its canned production made in Thai human-grade canning facilities that also produce human tuna; post-acquisition footprint now includes two Joplin Missouri plants. It is built around visible shredded or flaked whole proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon in broth rather than pate or gravy, with many recipes carbohydrate-free.
